Isaacs, Jeremy

Isaacs, Jeremy
   b. 1932, Glasgow
Sir Jeremy Isaacs has had a long and broadly successful career in various media positions, including head of Channel 4. However, his legacy will be overshadowed by Gerald Kaufman’s highly critical Select Committee report on the running of the Royal Opera House where Isaacs was director from 1988–96. He allowed the company to become homeless during the refurbishment of its main premises, and his work came under scrutiny in the six-episode documentary The House, aired in 1996. The first fly-on-the-wall programme attracted a television audience of more than two million. The institution was shown as a shambles, and Isaacs was blamed by his successor for mismanaging financial and other aspects of the business.
